Becoming More | Justice & Fairness (Week 2)
Dr. Larry Baucom leads the second week of “Becoming More” – where we follow the life and struggles of Moses.
Exodus 2:11-25
Some things drive us, allow us to grow, cause pain, or bring us to success.
1. Moses was driven by a sense of Justice.
Justice is a sense of fairness, upstanding morality, and attempting to do right or keep things right and reasonable. The Hebrews had a law – an eye for an eye – which was meant to keep things balanced and equal, but it was actually hurting people. Moses felt he was enacting justice when he killed an Egyptian who was beating a fellow Hebrew. He was wrong in his irreversible action, so he had to run away to the desert to avoid being killed as fair punishment.
2. When we are driven by a sense of justice, fear is not far behind.
When someone doesn’t do right, breaks a law, commits a crime, they should be punished… right? Sometimes, that desire for justice can rob us from the joy of forgiveness or the opportunity to breathe and show grace, to transform. Life isn’t fair. You must live more than fair.
Fear does not have the power to transform the heart – do not live by something that causes action or belief by way of fear and control.
3. We become more when love increases, and justice begins to loosen its grip.
Love God, love others – this is the basic truth we should live by.
