Dr. Larry and Dr. Troy Answer Your Questions (Incompatible #5) | Dr. Larry Baucom, Dr. Troy Doucet | Feb 2nd, 2025
Dr. Troy Doucet and Dr. Larry Baucom answer questions from the Suncoast Community challenging traditional Christian beliefs and emphasizing a more inclusive and transformative understanding of Jesus’ teachings.
Question 1: If Jesus didn’t come to earth to die on the cross for my sins… why did he come?
The Pastors layout 3 compelling reasons for Jesus’ coming:
-
To Reveal God’s Love – Jesus came to show humanity the fullness of God’s love, not just in death but in life—healing, teaching, and restoring those on the margins and challenging those who felt they held exclusive rights to God’s love and truth.
-
To Proclaim the Kingdom of God – Jesus’ mission was to inaugurate a new way of living where love, justice, and mercy shape human relationships.
-
To Confront and Overcome Systems of Control & Power – Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection exposed and defeated the man-made systems of control, violence, and oppression, offering a path to transformation and an unobstructed way to God.
Question 2: Does God work through other religions, or is Christianity the only way to know Him?
Again, the answer is outlined by three poignant truths:
-
God is Bigger than Any One Religion – If God is truly infinite love, then no single religious tradition can fully contain the vast knowledge of that love. If God is the source of life, love, and being then he can be seen through a variety of means.
-
Jesus is a Way-maker, Not a Gate-keeper – Jesus reveals God’s true nature, but he never demanded religious exclusivity; rather, he praised faithfulness wherever he found it.
-
All Truth is God’s Truth – If a religion promotes love, justice, and compassion, it reflects God’s work in the world, whether or not it bears the ‘Christian’ label.
Question 3: Why do people often believe in the religion of the culture or time period they’re born into?
Dr Doucet begins with the truth that people are naturally products of their culture, stating, that If you were born in Saudi Arabia then your view of God would naturally be shaped by the Islamic faith. God’s presence is not confined to Christianity. Jesus was a way-maker, not a gate-keeper. Therefore, all religious traditions that promote universal truths reflect God’s truth since all truth is necessarily God’s truth. The Pastors conclude their answer by pointing out that while faith is often inherited, spiritual growth involves individual questioning and evolving beyond cultural boundaries. Christianity’s historic imposition on other cultures has often distorted its core message.
Question 4: What happens when we die? Is there really a hell and a heaven?
Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God as a present reality rather than a distant reward or punishment. Hell is seen not depicted in scripture as endless, conscious torment but as detachment from love and the consequences God employs in order to restore His children to proper awareness of God’s love and actions that reflect it.
The conversation closes with a personal anecdote from Pastor Larry, reinforcing the key message: God’s love is constant, unconditional, and meant to help people become their best selves.
