Expectation Gap | Week One

The Expectation Gap of Others | Expectation Gap | Week One | Dr. Larry Baucom | June 18, 2023

What does your life’s expectation vs. reality look like?

Some say it’s better to aim high and miss than aim low and hit the target every time. However, there’s often disgruntlement when our expectations are too high.

What about other people? What do we do when they don’t meet our expectations? People can’t read our minds, so be careful not to react as if they can.

Act people first, not situation first. Significant relationships are not easy, we must remember to put in the work to keep them healthy.

Luke 10:38-42

1. Fulfilling the expectations of others can cause us to miss the most important moments.

Be careful not to focus on your “to-do” list so much that you miss the connection to the people around you.

“Be like me – I’m busy and miserable”. Don’t be like that.

When we are frustrated at others that don’t share our priorities, ask yourself “what can I learn from this?”

Try to simplify. Try to reconnect with a higher purpose, a higher feeling of peace and a desire to show others grace.

2. Getting things done often comes in conflict with building relationships with others.

Life passes too quickly. Be sure your priorities allow for quality time with valued people.

3. When we expect others to think and act like we do, the expectation gap becomes very obvious.

As Christians, we are expected to be like Jesus –  is that true for your life? Try to find the ability within yourself to love people despite your expectation gap – what I expect and who they really are. You might find it brings you more joy and less frustration.
