Fear Less | The Bible | Week Three | Dr. Troy Doucet | October 22, 2023
Dr. Troy Doucet continues the series called “Fear Less” – where we discover how to handle fear (of God, religion, the Bible, failure, etc.) and discover truth by having the courage to look where we might not want to look – to reimagine the most important and beautiful aspects of the Christian faith.
The Bible, a collection of important texts that has been a major part of human history, is something that a lot of people are fearful of. What is it, really? A sacred text that has no errors? A book of fairytales? A divine, already assembled book that dropped from Heaven, unchanged?
John 17: 13-17
God’s word is truth. Some truth comes from the Bible, some truth comes from children, grandparents, the neighbor down the road… but all truth is God’s truth. The word of God, the truth, exists within and independent of the Bible – people were hearing God’s word before the sacred texts were ever written.
1. The Bible is not God – but the Bible does reveal God’s Word – which is always truth.
God is bigger than the Bible; the stories that we read in it are by humans telling their experiences and interpretations of who God is and what God said… but that is not where it ends.
Is the Bible totally true, free of errors? No, but it doesn’t change the importance and big truth that is found within it – the details don’t take away from the overall story.
2. The Bible isn’t a book that commands us to believe in something- it is a collection of texts that calls us to trust in someone (Christ).
It is Jesus, not the Bible that is the ultimate truth of who God is.
3. God’s Word is not just believable (intellectually) – God’s Word is always livable (incarnationally).
Can you say that you live each and every day like Jesus would? Do you love others, forgive others, try your best to be your best? When you follow Jesus, when you use the Bible as a book of wisdom to learn how to live like Christ, your life will be transformed for the better.
