God Is Here, Even In The Dark Times Of Life | Easter Sunday | Dr Larry Baucom, Dr. Troy Doucet | April 20th
Dr. Troy Doucet and Dr. Larry Baucom reflect on the resurrection account through three key observations drawn from Mary Magdalene’s early-morning encounter at the empty tomb:
1. God is here—even in the dark times of my life.
Mary Magdalene’s journey to the tomb “while it was still dark” symbolizes not just physical but emotional and spiritual darkness. The dialogue explored how grief, fear, and disappointment often mark our darkest moments—yet it is in these moments that God is most present. Drawing parallels to Holy Saturday and the pandemic’s impact, they highlighted that God’s presence is not absent in our despair. Instead, like Moses entering the thick darkness where God dwelt (Exodus 20), we are often invited to meet God in the very places we’d rather avoid.
2. Let’s run toward God, despite our heartaches.
The conversation turned to the disciples’ reaction—Peter and John running to the tomb, each at their own pace. Whether we sprint or stumble, the invitation is to move toward Jesus. Their confusion at the empty tomb echoed our own struggles with uncertainty. Yet, as Dr. Doucet reminded, “The empty tomb is when nothing means everything.” Hope is not found in relics or places of death but in the risen Christ who meets us in our pursuit—especially when we dare to run toward Him through pain and confusion.
3. When God whispers my name, things change.
The most personal moment comes when Jesus speaks Mary’s name. In her grief, she doesn’t recognize him until he calls her. This speaks to how Jesus meets us intimately, transforming our sorrow with just a word. Dr. Baucom shared personal stories to illustrate how hearing God’s call brings clarity and purpose. Just as Mary’s moment with the risen Christ marked her transformation from mourner to messenger, so too our own lives are changed when we encounter the living Christ—not just in the light, but in the whispers within our darkest places.
Closing Thought:
Easter is more than a historical remembrance—it’s a present encounter. As Pastor Larry shared from his own Easter in 1998, the resurrection is not just Jesus rising from the grave; it’s the moment we discover why we were born. The risen Christ meets us in our search and, by name, calls us into life, light, and purpose.
He is risen!
