Grace Is Given To Those Who Deserve Punishment (Dreamers & Schemers #6) | Dr. Larry Baucom, Dr. Troy Doucet | September 28, 2025

Dreamers and Schemers #6 – Grace or Justice?

In the 6th dialogue, Dr. Larry Baucom and Dr. Troy Doucet discuss the transformative power of grace when given in lieu of justice.

1. Grace is given to those who deserve punishment.

Joseph’s brothers, who had betrayed him, now stood before him in desperate need. Justice demanded retribution, but Joseph wrestled with extending grace. Their guilt surfaced when they said, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother.” Yet Joseph’s heart began to soften, reminding us that true grace appears precisely where judgment is deserved.

2. With time, grace and wisdom bring healing.

Joseph tested his brothers, keeping Simeon while sending the others home. Through tears and reflection, he recognized that not all his brothers had been against him. Over time, God worked healing in Joseph’s heart. Even as Joseph devised tests, God was transforming revenge into restoration. Grace and wisdom, given space, begin to mend deep wounds.

3. God redeems life’s painful circumstances to bring hope to others.

When Judah offered himself in Benjamin’s place, Joseph broke down, weeping loudly as he revealed his identity: “I am your brother Joseph.” Instead of revenge, Joseph chose restoration. What his brothers meant for harm, God had redeemed to preserve life. The story shows how God can transform betrayal, loss, and pain into a testimony of hope for others.

Takeaway:

Justice demands repayment, but grace offers freedom. Healing requires time and God’s wisdom. And the painful chapters of life, surrendered to God, can become sources of redemption and hope for many.
