Harmony In Community Is Holy (Summer At The Movies #4)

Harmony In Community Is Holy (Summer At The Movies #4) | June 29th, 2025 | Dr. Troy Doucet

In this creative and heartfelt message, Dr. Troy Doucet used the 1978 musical “Grease” to illustrate deep theological truths about identity, community, and grace. While the movie might seem like lighthearted teen drama on the surface, Dr. Troy revealed it as a powerful parable about the church, where transformation doesn’t come from conformity, but from connection. He built his message around Romans 12:3–5, which calls believers to live as one body with many diverse, interdependent parts.

Point 1: “We Don’t Have to Match to Belong”

The characters in Grease, Sandy, Rizzo, Danny, and others, are all performing versions of themselves to fit in. But peace only comes when they begin to accept each other as they really are. Dr. Troy connected this to the Church, reminding us that authentic community doesn’t require uniformity.

“Jesus didn’t recruit twelve people who naturally got along—He brought together tax collectors, zealots, fishermen, and doubters and called them one body.”

Diversity isn’t a problem to fix, but a design to embrace. We’re not called to match—we’re called to matter. True belonging happens not when we erase our differences, but when we honor them in love.

Point 2: “Drama Doesn’t Disqualify Us from Community”

Just like Grease is full of teen drama, the Church is full of human drama. But the answer to conflict isn’t withdrawal—it’s commitment. Dr. Troy shared stories from his own ministry and theological experience, noting that a healthy community doesn’t mean the absence of disagreement—it means the presence of grace.

“Jesus didn’t reject Peter for denying Him or ghost Thomas for doubting. He restored and re-invited them.”

We mess up, we misstep—but we keep showing up. Because what keeps us together isn’t perfect agreement, but persistent love. Grace is not gated—it’s given.

Point 3: “Harmony is Holiness”

The movie’s final song, “We Go Together”, may sound silly, but it’s deeply spiritual. In it, every clique and conflict dissolves as everyone sings together. Dr. Troy used this to illustrate that God calls us not to unison, but to harmony—a blend of differences united in Christ.

“Holiness isn’t separation—it’s integration. It’s not about sounding the same, but about being synced in love and purpose.”

Dr. Troy challenged the church to measure spiritual maturity not by how much we know, but by how well we love across differences.

Closing Story: The Popsicle Theology of Analiese

Dr. Troy closed with a story about a young girl, Analiese, who offered her only popsicle to her mom and said, “It’s okay. I know something better will come.” Her simple faith became a picture of trusting God and living generously in community.

“What if we built a church like that? Where love isn’t earned, it’s shared. Where giving ourselves away doesn’t leave us empty—but makes space for something better.”

Takeaway Message:

In a divided world, Grease theology reminds us that we don’t have to match to belong, that drama doesn’t disqualify us, and that harmony, not sameness, is what makes us holy. The Church is messy, beautiful, and sacred because we all bring something different to the table—and in Christ, it all matters.

Because in God’s Kingdom, you can’t outgive grace… and you never run out of popsicles!
