“If Only” Is a Trap (“Transitions” #3) Dr. Larry Baucom, January 28, 2024

Dr. Larry Baucom continues our Transitions series with “If Only” is a Trap challenging us to let go of the tendency to second guess our past choices.

Drawing inspiration from Exodus 16:1-18, the sermon unfolds with three insights designed to help us avoid the “If Only Trap”.

Point 1: “If Only” is a trap that will rob us of joy.

The teaching begins with a reminder that following God may involve some struggle. Much like the Israelites, we find ourselves revisiting decisions as we strive for faithfulness, particularly when circumstances take an undesirable turn. While hindsight may offer a clear view of past mistakes, dwelling on these regrets only serves to pilfer the joys of the present.

Point 2: In the evening you will know…

Here Pastor Larry reminds us that transitioning to trusting God regardless of our circumstances can give us peace. In the evening when we are quiet before God we can renew our awareness that God is present and just as God provided quail for the Israelites, His presence can provide the sustenance needed to move forward.

Point 3: In the morning you will see.

Returning to the text, the people of Israel were told to place their hopes in God’s provision and each day they would gather manna from heaven to make bread for their families. The “If Only” mindset can be replaced with quiet reflection on God’s grace and hopeful expectation that with Him every day begins with new possibilities!
