Connections 4 | Sacrifice, Service, Surrender | Aug 17, 2024

Dr. Troy Doucet delivers the fourth installment of the Connections Series with a focus on deepening our connection with God through three essential elements: sacrifice, service, and surrender. Inspired by St. Paul’s letter to the church in Philippians. The sermon unfolds with three challenging points.

Point 1. Sacrifice: Love isn’t love until it has cost you something.

  • Dr. Doucet emphasizes that true love involves sacrifice. Love isn’t genuine until it costs something. He contrasts this with the superficial, transactional nature of love often seen in the world. Sacrificial love, as demonstrated by Christ, involves giving up comfort, security, and even one’s life for the sake of others. This type of love is countercultural, especially in a society focused on immediate gratification and self-interest. Sacrificing for others reflects the ultimate expression of love and deepens our connection with God.

Point 2. Service: Love is not love until it has acted on behalf of others.

  • Love must be translated into action. Dr. Doucet stresses that professing love isn’t enough; it must be demonstrated through service to others. This service is an offering to God and a tangible expression of God’s love in the world. He uses the story of the Good Samaritan (Lk. 10: 25-37) to illustrate that love in action, not just in words, is what truly matters. Serving others is a way to reflect God’s love and fulfill His commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Point 3. Surrender: Love is not love until it has abandoned control.

  • Surrendering to God is the final component of deepening our connection with Him. Dr. Doucet explains that love requires abandoning control and trusting God. Surrender is about letting go of personal agendas and allowing God to lead. He cites Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane as the ultimate example of surrender (Mt. 26:36-42). By giving up control, we open ourselves to God’s transformative love. This surrender is not just about yielding in moments of crisis but about living a life that is continually aligned with God’s will.

These three elements—sacrifice, service, and surrender—are defining characteristics of love and the foundation for a meaningful and profound connection with God.
