The More We Cover Up, The Less We Become (A.I. #2) | Dr. Troy Doucet | March 9, 2025
In this second installment of the “A.I.” series, Dr. Troy Doucet explores the human tendency to trade Authentic Identity for Artificial Identity. Drawing from the story of Adam and Eve (Gen 3:3-11), he highlights how our desire for control often leads us away from our true selves — leaving us feeling insufficient, ashamed, and disconnected from God. However, God’s response to our lost identity is not rejection but pursuit, inviting us to return to who we were always meant to be.
Key Points:
1. When You Forget Who You Are, You Believe What You’re Told
-
In Genesis 3, after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, He asked them two key questions:
-
Where are you? – Not about physical location, but about their spiritual and emotional condition.
-
Who told you that you were naked? – Addressing their distorted self-perception after stepping away from their authentic identity.
-
-
Application: Many of us believe false identities based on past experiences, societal expectations, or personal failures. God’s call is to return to our true self — loved, accepted, and free.
2. The More We Cover Up, The Less We Become
-
Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves, symbolizing how we often hide our true selves behind success, achievements, and perfectionism.
-
Illustration: We often let our careers, social media presence, or external validation define our worth. However, when those things fall apart, we feel lost.
-
Truth: What you hide will not heal. God doesn’t ask you to cover up—He invites you to be seen, known, and loved.
3. God’s First Response to Our Lost Identity Isn’t Rejection — but Pursuit
-
When Adam and Eve hid, God called out to them — not to condemn, but to restore.
-
Similarly, when Lazarus was dead in the tomb, Jesus called him out — unwrapping him from his grave clothes and giving him new life.
-
Application: God still pursues us today. No matter how far we’ve drifted or how broken we feel, His response is always love, grace, and invitation.
Main Takeaway:
Your authentic identity is not something you achieve — it’s something you receive. God has never lost sight of who you truly are; it’s time for you to come out of hiding, let go of shame, and embrace the person God created you to be.
Call to Action:
-
Stop listening to the lies that say you’re not enough.
-
Uncover the real you — the one who is fully known, fully loved, and fully accepted by God.
-
Step out of hiding and reclaim your authentic identity.
