This Year Jesus Will Be A Model For My Living (Incompatible #1) | Dr. Troy Doucet | January 5, 2025

In his 2025 New Year’s kickoff sermon, Dr. Troy Doucet launches the series Incompatible, challenging us to examine how ancient religious practices and beliefs often clash with the realities of modern life and objective truth. Using the metaphor of navigating with an outdated map, Dr. Doucet underscores the need for faith to adapt while preserving its core truths. Through scriptural insights and practical applications, he emphasizes three important points:

  1. Sometimes God will allow storms to dismantle what is incompatible with His true nature.
Pastor Troy highlights that life’s storms, though painful, are opportunities for God to dismantle ideas, habits, or doctrines incompatible with His true nature. Like the golden calf in Exodus, our modern “idols” — rigid traditions or misplaced self-sufficiency — must be removed to deepen our trust and relationship with God. Storms are not punishment but invitations to grow closer to God’s essence: love.

  2. God will knock down walls we have built for Him so that we can have more of Him.
God’s presence transcends the limitations we impose through cultural norms, traditions, and exclusivity. The tearing of the temple veil symbolizes His accessibility to all. Dr. Doucet calls for letting go of the “walls” that hinder us from experiencing a more expansive and transformative faith, embracing God’s openness instead of confining Him to human constructs.

  3. This year Jesus will be a model for my living, not merely an object of my worship.
Faith becomes vibrant and relevant when Jesus is not just worshiped as divine but followed as a model for daily life. Pastor urges us to embody Jesus’ teachings by engaging in compassion, justice, and love. By living out Christ’s example, faith transforms from a relic of the past into a force for present and future good.

Dr. Doucet concludes with the image of Michelangelo freeing David from a block of marble, likening it to God’s work in us. As God chips away at our incompatible beliefs and behaviors, He reveals the image of Christ within. This process, though challenging, aligns us with His purpose and transforms us into vessels of love and grace for the modern world.
