To Get Professional Margin We Need To Focus (Margins #5) | November 9, 2025 | Dr. Larry Baucom, Dr. Troy Doucet

Dr. Larry Baucom and Dr. Troy Doucet emphasize that margin, the space between our limits and our breaking point, is essential for healthy living and faithful work. Without margin, life becomes overloaded, and the urgent crowds out the important. When we regain margin, we create space for God to restore us, strengthen relationships, and guide our work with wisdom rather than exhaustion.

Point 1: God Desires Us to Have Professional Margin

In our work lives, many of us live at full capacity, overcommitted, stressed, and stretched thin. The story of Moses and Jethro in Exodus 18 illustrates that even great leaders cannot carry everything alone. Jethro tells Moses to delegate so he can do the work God actually called him to do. Likewise, professional margin comes when we recognize that burnout is not a badge of honor. Rest and boundaries are not weakness; they are acts of trust in God’s sufficiency.

Point 2: Focus Creates Margin

We often try to excel at everything, but we are only truly gifted in a few areas. Margin increases when we identify our strengths and focus on them, while allowing others to contribute where we are weaker. Trying to “juggle everything” leaves us depleted and ineffective. But when we focus on the tasks that matter most, productivity rises, stress decreases, and our work becomes both more meaningful and more fruitful.

Point 3: Margin Begins with Putting God First

The foundation of margin, whether relational, financial, moral, or professional, is spiritual. When we give God the “first” (first moments of the day, first portion of income, first place in our priorities), He orders the rest. Margin is ultimately formed by alignment: aligning our work, rhythms, and responsibilities under God’s guidance. As Proverbs 3:5-6 promises, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”

Core Takeaway

Professional margin isn’t doing less work; it’s doing the right work, in the right way, for the right reasons. It is choosing trust over striving, focus over frenzy, and wisdom over weariness. When we live with margin, we are more attentive to God, more available to others, and more effective in the work God has given us.
