Connections 5 | Our Connection to The Power of Resurrection | Aug 25, 2024

Teaching Pastor Troy Doucet delivers the final installment of our “Connections” series with a powerful if challenging sermon on the resurrection of Christ. Inspired by Philippians 3:10-14 and the witness of other religious traditions of the time, the teaching unfolds with three thought-provoking points.

Point 1: God’s promise is this: We have a connection to the power of Christ’s resurrection.

Dr. Doucet begins by exploring the profound significance of Jesus’ resurrection beyond its historical context. He emphasizes that the resurrection is not merely a past event but a present reality that exemplifies new life and transformation; a pattern testified by all of reality as animate and inanimate things evolve cycling through birth, death, and rebirth. This resurrection power should serve to inspire Christ-followers to rise above tribulation and limitations embracing a life of continual renewal and growth. The resurrection also serves as a call to live according to Christ’s way—love, compassion, and justice—proving that these principles transcend even death.

Point 2: Sometimes, your transformation will involve some tribulation.

Dr. Doucet then discusses how transformation often involves tribulation, likening the process to the pain of childbirth. Just as Jesus had to die to be resurrected, Christians must allow their old ways of living and thinking to die to make way for a new life in God. This process can be painful but is necessary for spiritual growth. By shedding old mindsets and habits, believers can experience the true power of resurrection in their daily lives, reflecting the essence of new life in Christ.

Point 3: The more faithfully I am following after Christ, the more fully I am becoming like Christ.

Finally, Dr. Doucet connects the journey of following Christ to a process of deep transformation. Drawing on the teachings of Bonhoeffer and Heidegger, he highlights that true discipleship requires sacrifice, obedience, and authenticity. By faithfully following Christ, believers are transformed into His likeness, sharing in His life, death, and resurrection. This journey, though challenging, leads to a fuller, more authentic existence that aligns with the truth of who Christ is.

Conclusion: A Personal Story

The sermon concludes with a story about Stacey Richard (Troy’s cousin), who, in planning her own funeral, exemplifies love and care that extends beyond her life. This act is portrayed as evidence of resurrection, where even in the face of death, there is an opportunity for powerful transformation, reflecting God’s ongoing work in the world.
