Practical Prescription 4.0 | The Power of Practicing Proper Patience | Oct. 20, 2024
In week four of the “Practical Prescriptions” series, Dr. Troy Doucet dives into the complex and often misunderstood spiritual fruit of patience. Throughout his sermon, titled Power of Practicing Proper Patience, he emphasizes that patience is not passive or weak, but an active virtue requiring intentional practice and perseverance.
Dr. Doucet challenges several misconceptions about patience, such as viewing it as inaction or a sign of weakness. He argues instead that patience is an active response to adversity, rooted in faith and trust in God’s timing and love. It’s not about the absence of frustration but about remaining determined and compassionate despite it.
He highlights three key points about patience:
-
Patience is permission to have imperfections– in ourselves and in others. — Dr. Doucet connects this to Jesus’ call to love enemies and go the extra mile, underscoring that patience gives room for growth and failure without immediate judgment.
-
Patience is the power to persevere because I know that with God– it isn’t over yet! — particularly when facing injustice or frustration. Patience, he says, is not about submission but about trusting that God’s plan will unfold, giving us strength to move forward even when situations seem unfair.
-
Patience A Process of Trusting God’s Timing, not mine! — Instead of rushing for immediate resolution, we do well to align with God’s greater purpose, which often calls for letting go of control and retaliation.
Through biblical examples, particularly from the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Troy illustrates that patience, when practiced properly, reflects Christ’s love and empowers people to grow spiritually by trusting God’s redemptive power in the midst of life’s challenges.
